Background

Professor James Whidborne is a control systems engineer with over 30 years experience in solving practical and theoretical problems in control, flight dynamics, mechatronics and other related areas. He has a BA degree in Engineering from Cambridge University and a PhD in Systems and Control from Manchester University (UMIST). Prior to joining Cranfield in 2003, he held a position at Kings College London.

James is head of the Dynamics, Simulation and Control Group in the Centre for Aeronautics. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He serves on the Editorial Board of several journals including Control Engineering Practice, the International Journal of Systems Science, and previously served on the International Editorial Board of Chinese Journal of Aeronautics.

James Whidborne has published over 250 refereed conference and journal papers. He is a named inventor on some five patents and he is the co-author of the books Critical Control Systems: Theory, Design and Applications and Multiobjective Optimisation and Control.
